David, the lucky sod, got the chance of a one-year research project with Apple in California. Half way through the year he fell in love with Derek in San Francisco. They invited me to spend a holiday with them before David returned to the UK. While I was there, I tried to emulate the new-wave Americans and take the kind of urban and street pictures that I admired by the likes of Lee Friedlander. It didn’t really work. What seems from the outside to be casual is actually carefully considered, and I produced very little that I really liked. Apart from conventional landscapes from trips to places like Yosemite.
