12 Faces

This started as a project for a men’s sexual health group in Calderdale and Kirklees who wanted photographs to stimulate discussion on male stereotypes during a conference. Jonathan arrived one weekend with 12 black bin liners full of costumes and false eyelashes. We eventually whittled the photos down to a set of 12 prints. At the time I was a member of Huddersfield Photographic Society, and wanted to show the set in the Open section of the society's Annual Exhibition in Huddersfield Art Gallery. Shock, horror! Front page of the Huddersfield Daily examiner “Male Nudes Cause Row”. The Art Gallery were amused and not at all affronted by the prints which they saw as somewhat tongue-in-cheek. At about this time, Photo 98 were setting up an administrative base in Huddersfield and offering “folio days” . They liked the series and offered me an exhibition in Huddersfield Media Centre, together with enlarged copies of the rejection letter from the Photographic Society and exchanges in the local press. It got a very positive review in The Big Issue. The prints went on to be shown in the Lawrence Batley Theatre and two other local galleries.
